Mexico seeks extradition of ex-Pemex CEO Lozoya on corruption charges

-

Mexico’s government has formally requested that Spain extradite the former chief executive of state oil firm Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, to face corruption charges at home, a Mexican foreign ministry official said on Tuesday.

Emilio Lozoya was arrested in Spain in February, giving President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador the first high-profile win in his government’s anti-corruption drive.

The Harvard-educated former investment banker was one of former President Enrique Pena Nieto’s closest aides, dating back to his presidential campaign. Pena Nieto picked him to run Pemex, which he did from 2012 to 2016.

Lozoya has not been seen publicly since mid-2019 and is accused of corruption related to a wide-ranging bribery and money laundering case involving Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht. He has previously denied wrongdoing.
