An Inspector of Police (IP) and Police Constable who were found guilty for soliciting a bribe of Rs. 10,000 were yesterday sentenced to 28 years Rigorous Imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.
The accused IP Anil Jayantha Hettiarachchi and Constable Ranasinghe attached to the Aralaganwila Police Station were arrested while soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 10,000 to refrain from taking legal action against a suspect who was illegally possessing venison in 2009.
They were arrested by officers attached to the Bribery Commission while accepting a sum of Rs.10,000 as a bribe.
Delivering the verdict following a lengthy trial, High Court Judge Shashi Mahendran observed that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. Thereafter, the accused were sentenced to 28 years Rigorous Imprisonment and also ordered to pay a fine of Rs.20,000 for each.
The Bribery Commission had filled indictment comprising four charges against both accused for soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs.10,000.
