FBI arrests former state trooper accused of money laundering, falsifying government documents

Former state trooper Rene Algara was arrested Saturday after an FBI investigation resulted in charges of money laundering and falsifying government documents, according to an Arizona Department of Public Safety news release.

Algara was arrested on 21 felony charges related to money laundering and five felony charges related to falsifying government documents, the news release stated. Algara’s  employment was terminated prior to his arrest.

He was arrested by FBI agents in coordination with DPS.

Algara started working with DPS in February 2016 and was assigned to the Highway Patrol Division in Cochise County.

The FBI investigation remains active, the release stated.
